How We Test
We reckon you deserve to know exactly how we pick our top products. No smoke and mirrors here — just a straightforward breakdown of how we research, score, and rank every item that makes it onto top7.au.
Why Only 7 Products?
Most "best of" lists throw 15 or 20 options at you and call it a day. We think that defeats the purpose. If you're after a recommendation, you shouldn't have to wade through a novel to find it.
Seven is the sweet spot. It's enough to cover different budgets and use cases, but tight enough that every product on the list genuinely earns its spot. If something doesn't stack up, it doesn't make the cut — simple as that.
How We Select Products
Every category starts with a broad sweep. Here's how we narrow it down:
- Deep research — We review manufacturer specs, professional reviews from trusted Australian and international publications, and aggregate hundreds of user reviews from Amazon AU and other Aussie retailers.
- Hands-on testing where possible — When we can get our hands on a product, we do. Real-world use beats spec sheets every time. We test in Australian conditions — our humidity, our power standards, our internet speeds.
- Community feedback — We keep an ear to the ground in Australian tech communities, forums, and reader emails. If heaps of people are raving about (or warning against) a product, we take notice.
- Australian availability— A product can be brilliant, but if you can't buy it easily in Australia with reasonable shipping and local consumer protections, it doesn't make our list. We only rank products readily available on Amazon AU.
Our Scoring System
Each product is scored across 3 to 5 category-specific dimensions on a scale of 1 to 10. The categories change depending on what we're reviewing — because what matters for headphones is completely different to what matters for a laptop.
Here's what the scale means:
- 9–10: Outstanding — Best in class. Sets the benchmark for the category.
- 7–8: Very good — Genuinely impressive with only minor shortcomings.
- 5–6: Decent — Gets the job done but nothing to write home about.
- 3–4: Below average — Notable weaknesses that affect the experience.
- 1–2: Poor— Significant issues. Products scoring this low don't make our lists.
For example, headphones are scored on Sound Quality, Active Noise Cancellation, Comfort, Battery Life, and Value. A monitor might be scored on Image Quality, Build and Design, Features, and Value. Every dimension is weighted equally — we don't play favourites with any single metric.
The Tier System
Not everyone has the same budget, and the most expensive option isn't always the right one. That's why we split our top 7 into three tiers:
- Premium— The no-compromise picks. These are the best products money can buy if budget isn't your primary concern. You're paying top dollar, but you're getting top performance.
- Best Value— The sweet spot. These products punch well above their weight and offer the best balance of performance and price. For most people, this is where we'd point you first.
- Budget— The best bang for your buck. These products deliver solid performance without breaking the bank. Perfect if you're after something reliable without the premium price tag.
The tier system matters because a 9/10 product at $800 and a 7/10 product at $200 serve completely different needs. We want you to find the right product for yoursituation, not just the "best" one on paper.
How Often We Update
Tech moves fast, so our lists need to keep up. We run two automated update cycles to make sure you're always seeing accurate information:
- Prices updated daily— Every morning we pull the latest prices from Amazon AU so you're never looking at stale numbers. If a deal drops or a price jumps, you'll see it reflected within 24 hours.
- Rankings reviewed weekly— Every Sunday we audit every category for product availability, newer models, and any changes that might affect our rankings. If a product gets discontinued, goes out of stock, or a newer version launches, we'll swap it out and update the rankings.
Every page shows when it was last reviewed and confirms that prices are updated daily, so you always know you're looking at current info. If a cracking new product hits the Australian market mid-week, we won't wait — we'll fast-track a review and update the rankings straight away.
Editorial Independence
Let's be crystal clear: no brand, manufacturer, or retailer pays for placement on our lists. Full stop. Our rankings are based entirely on merit — performance, build quality, value for money, and real-world usability.
We don't accept sponsored placements, paid reviews, or "gifted" products in exchange for favourable coverage. If a product is on our list, it's because we genuinely reckon it's one of the best options available to Aussie buyers.
We include honest pros andcons for every product. If something has a dodgy build quality or overheats like a barbie in February, we'll tell you. Honest recommendations are the only kind worth making.
How Affiliate Links Work
We believe in being upfront about how we keep the lights on. top7.au is a participant in the Amazon Associates Program. When you click a product link on our site and make a purchase on amazon.com.au, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.
Here's what that means in plain English:
- You pay the exact same price whether you use our link or not.
- We earn a small percentage from Amazon — it doesn't come out of your pocket.
- The commission we might earn has absolutely zero influence on which products make our list or how they're ranked.
- We'd rather recommend a cheaper product that's genuinely better than push an expensive one for a bigger commission. That's not how we operate.
This revenue is what allows us to keep researching, testing, and publishing independent reviews. For the full details, check out our Affiliate Disclosure.
